Lady Sarah Ashley leaves behind the finery of the English aristocracy to travel to the Australian outback and confront her husband Lord Ashley on the Faraway Downs cattle station, where he spends most of his time. She finds a huge property in financial disarray, on the brink of takeover by scheming King Carney, who controls most of the local cattle market. With the help of a swarthy drover, Sarah decides to challenge Carney's monopoly by herding 500-strong of prize cattle all the way to port in the face of stiff resistance from her rival's right-hand man and heir apparent, Neil Fletcher.

The imaginative uncle agrees to tell the youngsters bedtime stories to help them drift off to sleep, inventing tall tales full of magic, mystery and daring deeds. When elements from these stories, suggested by the tykes, unexpectedly impact on real life, Skeeter realises that his fairy-tales are coming true and he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with the two excited youngters.
